Calla Lily

Name: Zantedeschia Spp. (Araceae)

The calla lily of the florist trade belong to the Zantedeschia genus. Traditionally, it is only available in yellow (Zantedeschia elliottiana) but recent hybridisation efforts have resulted in plants that produce cream, yellow, orange, red, purple and even almost black flowers.

The plant survives the Winter as an underground tuber. With age, this tuber can grow quite large and become quite knobby. It is possible to break away the "knobs", which are actually shoots, and grow them on as new plants.

Warning: This plant contains a cocktail of toxins. Calcium oxalate crystals are also found in the roots, stems and leaves of this plant. Ingestion can be a painful experience!
