Cyclamen hederifolium (syn. C. neapolitanum), unlike its florist cyclamen cousins, flowers in late Summer and Autumn, followed leaves with silver/green pattern.
Each plant has a different pattern (like our finger print), and is worth growing just for the leaves alone.
There are two varieties, the more common purple and less common white.
The seeds are dispersed by ants.
Ants collect the seeds for the sugary coating and once consumed, the seeds are discarded far from the mother plant.
This cyclamen is perfect for naturalising under deciduous trees - an established carpet of these plants look absolutely stunning when in flower.
It can also be easily grown in a container.
Cyclamen likes cold wet Winters and hot dry Summers.
They are very long lived, eventually forming very large tubers.
