Gaillardia pulchella

Name: Gaillardia pulchella (Asteraceae)
Common Names: Blanket Flower, Firewheel, Indian Blanket

Flower

This low-maintenance hardy perennial from North America produces brilliant coloured flowers with green/purple centres and yellow / scarlet petals. The large flowers are suitable for cutting, lasting for about a week. Dead heading will prolong the flowering season.

Gaillardia is tolerant of salty conditions and will put on a good display even in the light sandy soils along the coast. Wet water logged soils will cause root rot. The spraling nature of the plant makes it suitable as a ground cover, especially for hot, dry exposed banks.
