Iris is a genus of rhizomateous or bulbous perennials, commonly grown by gardeners. The flowers have six petals, three that point up (standards) and three that curve down (falls). The bearded iris is perhaps the most widely grown Iris. It grows a fan of leaves from a horizontal rhizome, usually located on the surface of the soil. Most cultivars have been bred from Iris germanica.

Dutch Iris

Dutch iris has been expensively bred in Holland mainly from Iris xiphium and Iris tingitana, plus possibly a few more other species. It grows from a bulb and is dormant in the summer.
